everything's a rock opera these days

One of my clients is a composer who will soon be off to Las Vegas to begin composing a rock opera version of an opera he has already created. We've been discussing the business of music the last few classes, and he asked me to find something specifically about rock operas for our last class next week. To my horror/amusement, I discovered the following facts:

  • GWAR has four rock operas to their name. Each is quite unique. I honestly can't imagine a performance of any of them.
  • Bat Boy: The Musical (!) begins filming this year (!!). Also, it received high reviews, and showed at the Edinburgh Festival last year. The Wikipedia entry tells the whole story, and wow, what a synopsis.
  • They're making a rock opera out of the story of Jennifer Wilbanks, the bride who ran away because she didn't want to get married, then said she was kidnapped. It's about the community and their search for her, though, not actually about her. Art and life, what?
  • Even Strongbad has a rock opera!

more hairstyles

I just had to share a couple more that I've seen since last time.

First, a guy and a girl who both had regular haircuts (the girl even had normal bangs), but both had shave the sides of their head, leaving a strip of the regular haircut about the width of a palm down the middle of their head.

Next, a guy who again had a regular haircut, similar to the last one, but had just one side shaved. When I mentioned it to Chris, she commented that it sounded like the barber had fallen asleep while cutting the guy's hair.

Lastly, yesterday I saw a guy who had a mullet-style cut, except that half of the mullet in the back was cut off at a regular length. Yes, he had half a mullet's worth of hair.

Bizarre.
